The
2008-09 PORT season starts in November and Unity Fellowship will be serving
during the same weeks and at the same churches as last season. We will be at Temple Baptist Church the week
of 11/26 – 12/3/08 and at Warwick Memorial UMC 3/11 – 3/18/09. I will certainly try again to acquire the
Saturdays (Nov. 29 and March 14) for our days of service.
Last year the PORT program was 15 years old and served 609 men, women, and children (a record high). There were 11,985 bed nights and 23,970 meals served. Most of the people were from Newport News, but there were guests from the whole Tidewater area, York County, Richmond and Surry. There were people over 70 years of age and the youngest guest was 18 days old! Only 80 of the total 609 persons were documented as being chronically homeless.
Of the 609 guests 139 were placed into some sort of permanent housing, 10 persons were given Greyhound tickets to return to other states and 2 people were donated a vehicle from LINK.
RTW was contracted again and helped the guests in filling out forms to obtain birth certificates, DMV ID’s, food stamps, and DD214 forms. RTW, also, paid for a guest’s CNA state exam and bought her a uniform.
On April 24, 2008 LINK was presented, by Governor Tim Kaine, The Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award – Faith Based Organization for the PORT Emergency Winter Shelter for the Homeless Program. This award is for the 6,000 volunteers who participated in this huge program and who “make it happen every year for the PORT homeless guests” and without whom LINK would be unable to provide such a successful program to those without homes. I had the honor of accepting the award with Tom Jones, a LINK Board Member, in Virginia Beach.
It is expected that the numbers will be higher this year due to the economic struggles that have hit some folks in the community. I look forward to serve with Unity Fellowship in this community outreach program and with the 6,000 + volunteers this season. I hope you will join me again this season.

Once again I have returned to the message of yesterday as I read the article “The Folly of Criticism.” Truth never changes and I have chosen to print this article in part as it was written by R. James Heinecamp in the Weekly Unity in 1970.
“Is there anyone who likes to receive criticism? How many of us smile on the inside when we are criticized? Winston Churchill said with tongue in cheek, “I do not resent criticism even when, for the sake of emphasis, it parts for the time with reality.” Criticism is hard to take. So called constructive criticism isn’t easy either, particularly when it is not asked for.
Why do we criticize the habits, weaknesses, and actions of others? Why do we make judgments? What is criticism? And how can we be less critical, if that is our wish?
Jesus said, “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, “Let me take the speck out of your eye, when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brothers eye.” He was asking us why we criticize and tell other people what is wrong with them when we aren’t even aware that we have something wrong with ourselves!
Criticism builds barriers between people----it does not establish a close and loving relationship and seldom does continual criticism change a person. We would have far better influence on him if we changed ourselves. As we become less critical the other person is inclined to become more acceptable!
How much do we see in others but do not see in ourselves? When we become aware of this fact, we are more able to overcome the habit of criticizing. When we have taken the beam out of our own eye, we will be in a much better position to help other people, because we have worked through our own problem and will fully understand.
Before we judge or criticize another, let us ask ourselves, Have I had this experience?...Have I lived through what they are living through? If not, then what right do I have to find fault? In essence, every time I criticize or judge someone I am saying, “Why aren’t you more like me?” Think of the last time you criticized someone. Weren’t you really saying, “I wouldn’t do it that way. Why aren’t you more like me?”
In order not to criticize we must learn to accept others. Then, too, we must learn to accept ourselves. Acceptance does not mean,” I approve.” It means, “I understand; I acknowledge.” The more we accept ourselves, the more we can accept others. And, as we learn to accept our outer world, we better learn to understand and acknowledge our inner world. As we do so, we will acquire a deeper understanding of universal truth.”
Light and Blessings,
Reverend Jan Sloan
